Good morning! Remember last week when we were talking about the tropical wave over the northwest Caribbean breaking into two parts -- one part becoming Otto and another part heading into the central and western Caribbean? Well, that second part is now hugging the coast of Central America -- straddling land and the western Caribbean. With favorable upper level wind patterns and warm water, it appears we're getting close to having a tropical depression form near the coast of Honduras this morning. The Hurricane Hunters are currently investigating the system.
Some of the tropical moisture on the northern fringes of this system will likely get drawn toward south Florida over the next couple of days, leading to a slightly higher chance of rain for us. Later this week, a cold front moves through the area and it appears that this front may very well miss the developing tropical depression in the Caribbean. What this means is the more likely scenario now is that any system that forms will meander across the NW Caribbean for the next several days, waiting for a front strong enough and far enough south to pick it up and guide it to the northeast.
This system isn't much to worry about now but will be worth monitoring over the next several days.
