Brian: So how cold has it been this winter?

I compiled some statistics from this winter at Fort Myers.. check out some of these numbers! We still will likely add to this a few more times before we get to the end of March!

Days with a Low At or Below 50 = 40
Days with a Low At or Below 45 = 26
Days with a Low At or Below 40 = 8
Days with a Low At or Below 35 = 3

Notice that there were not many extremely cold days; just many, many colder than average days (in terms of low temperature). The reason? El Nino... while that active southern jet stream gave us many days with below average temperatures, it also kept a predominantly NW flow in the lower levels of the atmosphere and a westerly flow in the upper levels. This added up to colder days (compared to average).. the PM "cold" was more extreme than the AM "cold" most days. That active jet stream also provided a lot of high clouds on many evenings, helping to keep the temperature up just a bit.
